Cancel emg?

Postby LKP1231 on October 1st, 2014, 6:43 pm

Did anyone ever think of canceling the emg at the last minute? The ncv part of mine was done last week. Knowing you have *** doesn't really help if there's no treatment or cure. I don't know if I could live with not knowing but what about knowing something bad?

I wouldn't do the EMG just because it is a waste of money and you are better off spending that money on a vacation. However it's your call.
BFS FAQ:
1. No, that's not bulbar
2. No, the location doesn't matter
3. Yes, we have all had that symptom
4. No, you're not the exception
5. No, that's not ominous
6. No, you don't need an EMG
7. Yes, you will be fine

Really? It's no charge to me by the way. I don't know if I could just ignore what's happening.

Mario, I know you're a long time member here. Have you never had the emg? You have so many posts it's hard to look back for that info!

That is correct, I never had an EMG. Lots of people here have never had them. In my personal opinion, once you start going down the EMG road you have convinced yourself that something horrible is wrong with you and the doctors just haven't found it yet. So once you get one, you will inevitably get a second one. And then some people continue that to get five, six, or seven of them. It's a path that I really try to shy BFS people from going down because it really won't end anywhere except you being frustrated and having spent a lot of money. It's not really going to tell you anything other than "I don't have a motor neuron disease." Which doesn't really help because most people aren't going to believe it anyway. They are just going to go keep testing until they get the answer they have already decided in their head.

This is why I don't recommend that people get EMGs. You don't need one. It's not going to tell you anything.

In my case, I lost my first husband to *** over 8 yrs ago. I do understand the value of the emg. It does seem like an odd coincidence that the ice bucket challenge brought up a lot of tough feelings and all of a sudden this is happening (and yet twitching was no where near an initial symptom for him). I want to know this is anxiety induced, pretty much more than anything. I've got no sensory symptoms to lead me away from this thought. Mostly invisible twitching and some muscle soreness, a cramp or 2 in the beginning, and not enough time (less than 2 months) to be relieved that there's no weakness. I wish I wasn't going for the emg but I think I have to :(. I appreciate your input.

I'm on my 5th EMG and still not satisfied.
My advise , do it just once. If it's clean get the hell out and don't come back.
That what my first Als specialist told me...ehhhhh, yep I couldn't hold my self and keep going. :(

Setting aside that you most probably do not have ALS - good sides of EMG are the following:
1. It may reveal or confirm compression issues which need attention before they may get to bad consequences
2. It is practically the ultimate way to see if you have something bad going in your motor cotrex or not (in upper motor neurons), in other words - how your central motor processor is working.
3. It clears you from MND, and, if taken correctly, the result might be a first step in treating what most of us have - anxiety disorder.

For people who have ALS right now there is no cure, and rilutek only adds 6 month in average. But - people with officically set diagnosis have more possibilities for palliative cure, and they are eligible to take part into clinical inestigations which are otherwise not open. Considering the fact that total anount of ALS patients is not huge (compared to cancer for example), this is one of the reasons why the cure is not developed yet. So, however sad it is to say, despite on the fact that ths is no cure right now, each clearly diagnosed issue gives some hope ot next one - via participation in RCT too.

I'm torn LPK...don't know what to say. I agree with Mario sooo much, but on the other hand I know the anxiousness you feel and desire to have the EMG.

I thought I would be satisfied with 1, and it was clean....but unfortunately I've let my mind and fear take over and have been answer seeking since. I still haven't gotten another one, but I am pretty sure I will at some point.

I'd hate to see that happen to you, but it sounds like you are going to get it and I would say then take the positive facts from it (like Yulia said) and get out of town (like Jayden said).

Hugs to you!

Well I had it and altho there were 2 spots w facics they are due to discs in back and neck and pinched nerves. Some carpal tunnel too. He and the PA said specifically No ***. Now I see why it's hard to believe when things are found but explained. Also said take B12 vitamin. Trying to breathe now.

Good news! So try to accept the fact that life is going on! It might be hard after such severe self-pressing. But usually most of fellows agree to live again woth fascics, burning, cramps and memories...
