My BFS symptoms and Question about Stiff hands in AM

Postby eric77 on September 18th, 2014, 11:46 am

I would like to first say that I an new to the Forum and would like to share my symptoms. My symptoms started 5 months ago:

First symptoms that brought me to the doctor (April 2014):

-24/7 twitch in my left thigh that would not go away (last 1 month) with other daily short lived twitches across different parts of the body
(had lots of blood work done and finally referred to a Neuro who saw my twitch through my pants, did a quick clinical for weakness and deemed me BFS and not ALS)
-The 24/7 twitch finally went away but still have random daily short twitches in many muscles

In June 2014 the Neuro finally allowed me to get a EMG test done on my thigh. It came back clean! (this was about 2 months after the 24/7 twitch started)

More symptoms noticed later in June thru July:
-Noticed my tongue would go a bit crazy when I would stick it out (tremor) (I only checked mine because I read about ALS and tongue movements. Freaked me out)
Neuro sent me to a movement specialist who said my tongue tremor was distractible
-lower 24/7 jaw tremor (if I put my teeth together very slightly they chatter as if I were shivering) (didn’t notice this until after seeing the movement specialist. Found this post - viewtopic.php?f=5&t=16277
-when I would put my weight on my thigh in standing leaning towards one thigh position or when in a squatting position, my outer thigh muscle fibers will go crazy fast. Found this post - viewtopic.php?f=4&t=18436 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNPu-inR ... e=youtu.be (mine look like this persons)
-Typing on a keyboard seemed a bit different too. I wan’t really any slower but just felt different. This symptom may have been there from the start - can’t rely remember.

More symptoms noticed later in August into September 2014: (this is my question)

-Some days my wrists seem a bit sore. I sit at a computer all day so I started to think it may be carpel tunnel but wasn’t really sure
-When I wake up some mornings now I notice that either a couple of fingers or the whole hand is numb (this sometimes happens every couple of days). I think I have experienced this in both hands. I usually clinch my fist and open it a couple time and it starts tingling and then its back to normal.
-Also I notice that in the mornings my hands/or fingers feel a slightly stiff upon wakening. I do the clinch my fist and open thing and it seems better but it just worries me because of all the new hand symptoms.

I am wondering If anyone else have had these stiff hands in the morning. It seems to be in both of them. I had an EMG at 2 months on my Leg but wondering if I should get another one soon on my wrist and hand. This new symptom like all the others kind of freaks me out. Of course I am scared like most about ALS. I have not experienced any weakness anywhere that I can tell. Any input would be helpful. thanks

I can relate to some of your symptoms, not all. To note, I have neuropathy of all limbs - multifocal. I don't know if this neuropathy is a cause for twitching.

See my symptoms here: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=20814#p156544

Note anxiety symptoms here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=20931#p157408

My suggestion is to take it one day at a time and try to calm anxiety as much as possible.

Thanks misterjuanperalta,

I just wanted to update that the stiff hands in the morning for the most part went away. There are some days that one finger feels that way but as far as what I was feeling before in my hands seem to have passed ( lasted a couple weeks). My left wrist does still feel a little tight/different or like a carpel tunnel feeling maybe some days still but who knows whats going on there. It has not bothered me to the point of going to the docs. Thanks again.

Jayden

All is good, I still have the tongue and jaw tremors. Nothing has really changed a lot. I would say that my jaw tremor has calmed down a bit in intensity but it will ramp up when my anxiety is higher. The tongue still does its dance if I extend it out like its at a dance party or something. No weakness or anything though. I do remember when I first noticed it though I had trouble swallowing for a couple days but found that it was because my anxiety was off the charts due to noticing the tongue dance. Also mine are always going, haven't ever stopped (24/7). I don't have the vibrating like you mention in the neck though, but that doesn't mean I won't get that at some point. I know with BFS symptoms can come and go and news may arrive.

As far as vibrating I did start getting a buzzing feeling in the top of my left foot for the fist time the other day (6 month into BFS). It goes buzz, then stops for a second, then goes buzz, then stops for a second, then goes buzz, and so on and so on... all day long. I just notice it when I am either standing still, sitting, or laying in bed. But here is my post about that

Thanks for checking in. All is good!

Hey LKP1231

A movement specialist is someone who is specialized in movement disorders. I guess my Neuro just called it a movement specialist when really its a movement disorder specialist. I did find a online definition:

"A movement disorder specialist is a neurologist who has received additional training in Parkinson’s disease (PD) and other movement disorders including dystonia, chorea, tics and tremors. Whereas a general neurologist may treat patients with any of more than 100 neurological conditions, a movement disorder specialist focuses primarily on Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders."

In my case I went in to see one because my Neuro wanted to have my tongue tremor looked at by someone who dealt more with tremors. The movement disorder specialist said it was a distractible tremor. He said it started to go away when I sat there and was making fast fist clinches (opening and closing my hand into a fist) and slapping my knee with my hand as another exercise. He would ask me to do these exercises while he was watching the tremor. Once he said it started to do away when I did other actions he deemed it a distractible tremor. I just remember asking him that if he could do the test again right after it and he didn't looked to pleased. He went ahead and did it again though to appease me.
