New twitcher here...

Postby DKM on June 4th, 2014, 7:26 pm

Hi Guys,

I am new to this very useful and informative forum.

My symptoms started 3 and a half month ago. At first I just had a general feeling of fatigue and my tongue felt heavy and within about 7 days I had twitching calf muscles.
The twitches seemed to fade out for around 3 weeks then they came back with avengence and recently I have had twitching, predominantly on my calf muscles but I do twitch all over... Calves, thighs, bum, back, arms and more now my right eyelid is twitching a lot. I also sometimes feel like I am slurring/stumbling over certain words although this comes and goes. I, like most people on here consulted Dr Google and of course ALS/MND came up which scared the sh*t out of me and gave me cause for concern.
Very recently I have been having other weird symptoms such as a burning sensation on certain fingertips which may only last for 5 minutes and then fade away. I also have a weird pressure feeling in my sinuses, no pain as such, they just occasionally make a squeeking noise and I get a sensation of pressure on them and I have also been bring up darkish coloured mucus from my throat mostly in the morning when first awake and get in the shower. I am also getting bouts of tinnitus (ringing in my ears) which is annoying.
I know everyone on here will be twitchers but can anyone relate to the latter of my symptoms such as heavy tongue feeling and stumbling over certain words and tinnitus and sinus issues? I must say I have made myself rather anxious worrying that I have Bulbar Onset. My tongue isn't twitching and I can still gulp down water and eat without a problem but I am worried that I may be at the early stages of it. My sensible side says BFS my anxiety filled side says ALS :/

How old are you? And yes I have experienced that with all the tongue worries.

Thanks Shawn,

The sensible side of my head tells me that yet I have this anxious side the rears its ugly headand fills me with worry.

I have an appointment with a Neurologist in 12 days time to get checked over for peace of mind.

This BFS thing seems to be a vicious circle at times!

As others (more knowledgeable than me) have said... Nothing here sounds like ALS.

I'm not saying your other symptoms are 'all in your head' but there is a possibility that your anxiety about the possibility of a terminal disease has caused you to focus much more on your body and notice sensations that are either pre-existent conditions or normal bodily sensations.

Anecdotally, there seems to be a lot of BFSers that complain of tinnitus. We complain of a lot though :) so it isn't possible to be certain about any connection between the two symptoms.

Almost forgot.... Welcome.

Cheers guys,

I have never been much of an anxious person or a hypochondriac and wasn't overly concerned when I first started twitching but the more recent symptons such as the occasional stumbling over certain words (which comes and goes) and my sinuses and ears playing up got me rather worked up and anxious and feeling out of character.
My calves are going crazy as I type this! *beep*, I need a holiday!! :)

Lot more guys know more about it than I do. You just can't put your ear plugs in when *beep* starts going down and you have a 50 cal machine gun going off in your left ear so I wonder where I could of got mine from who knows?

A bit of reassurance is good to calm the nerves

Well at least you have a valid excuse for your tinnitus as I can imagine combat tours would knock up the decibel levels a bit ! I must just have the volume of my iPod up too high!

Well I suppose I can find out more at my Neurologist appointment in 12 days time... Right now I need to learn to meditate or something!! ;)

DKM - so many have their first bout of anxiety along with bfs. They go together. It is not a prerequisite to have anxiety first in order to develop bfs though it happens often in that order too. They just go together like peanut butter and jelly so we are really all the same in the end. Welcome.

Funnily enough. When I first developed symptoms about 3 and a half months ago I was feeling rather stressed out and wasn't eating or sleeping properly so I can definitely see a potential link there and ever since then I have felt anxious due to the ever increasing and changing list of symptoms that I'm getting. It's a crazy old syndrome if I do indeed have BFS...
