Tongue twitches on the tip / body twitches too !

Postby Anxious guy on October 12th, 2013, 5:06 am

Hi I am 34 and have had health anxiety most of my life, my worrying comes and goes.
I'm not new to twitches but I am very new to twitches on my tongue !
About 4 years ago I had a twitch on my chin that lasted about 6 weeks, it twiched every minute but gradually subsided and towards the end it only twitched when aggravated by movements but it fully disappeared although since then I do get times were I twitch head to toe constantly in all muscles !!
About 2 months ago I had a twitch on my eyelid that was constant for over a week but I ignored it as I know they are very common...

But..... Over the the past 6 months I noticed buzzing or a funny sensation at the tip of my tongue but thought nothing of it and now this past few weeks my tongue has been twitching at the tip which looks like a few different spots in the same area !! Sometimes it's right in the centre and sometimes it's pulling slightly up or down !!
This happens at rest or talking and makes me think I'm maybe saying certain word awkwardly or different but no one else hears it !
It spiralled me into extreme anxiety about things like ALS and I can honestly say I have never been so stressed / anxious in my life !!
I seem my doc who said people get twitches and you have history of twitches so she thought it was BFS although arranged an appointment to see a neurologist which I did yesterday ...
The neuro done tests and said its BFS as I have absolutely no weakness in my body and even my tongue. He said he wouldn't even bother with EEG or other tests as he was confident its BFS !

That all said I keep looking at my tongue and asking myself are those dents near the tip normal etc !! There are no dents if I stick my tongue out only when it's relaxing behind my teeth... Near the tip where you would curl your tongue..

After a week of tongue twitches my whole body started twitching, I guess due to anxiety !
I just can stop reading story's and examine my tongue etc and I even feel slight nausea now and slight loss of appetite ..
The twitches can be felt and are visible ! They are really getting me down...

I would also add that my arms and legs now feel weak and sore muscles but I can still do push ups and I ran a couple of miles 2 nights ago... I have been going to bed to get 9 hours sleep and up at 6am with my kids, I used to go to bed about 11.30 but feel tired ! Maybe this is brought on by my anxiety ?

Hi,
I wonder why you read "those" stories and do not read theese stories, posted on this site, which are related to your actual condition and able to give you feeling of confidence instead of spending hours looking at your tongue and making good ground for nervous breakdown?

Health anxiety is extremely easy to provoke, and once this had happened, person has to be very cautious about choice for reading. Instead of reading about ALS which is not your case it would be much better to read aobut BFS and recognize that your case is the same as for about 4 thousands of participants.

Thanks so much for taking time to reply...
Have many people on here had twitches on their tongue that can be felt and very visible?
It's made me so sick and I am worried so bad I am feeling nausea and depressed ! I know I am and always have been a hypo but I have a 2 yr old and a 1month old baby at home and I worry..
I am never going to look at those sites again...
I just wish my tongue would stop twitching as it makes me very conscious when speaking etc

My left calf is also going non stop, could my heightened anxiety be causing this ?
Got small and large twitches and the crawly twitchy sensation....

Do a search here on 'tongue twitch' and you'll get an answer to that question. Seriously, so many of us have had or do have them.
As for the constant leg twitching, it's called a hotspot. It's so incredibly common with BFS I'd say they're to be expected. This month the leg, next month the thumb, then the big toe, etc.
If you focus on decreasing your anxiety and accepting your benign condition, your symptoms will likely improve. Mine improved greatly through diet modification as well, though I hate to tell everyone to try it since I believe BFS can be caused and cured by any number of things. Take care.

So.... Have many of you have had tongue twitches that just go all the time when moved or when speaking etc
Once I started worrying i got twitches everywhere !!
When the tongue is twitching did anyone perceive to be pronouncing certain words a bit off ?
It's really getting me down as I am so aware of it...

People here report strange pronounciation etc even without tongue twitches. It is typical for anxious persosn to percieve pronounciation issues.

I would suggest to read posts made by Matt bobajojo. he has constant tongue twitches (plus overall boby ones) for over one year and still fine.

I seen what Matt had described but it sounds like his whole tongue is moving but mine is little spots near the end just pulsing in and out like a proper twitch ! So it does sound very different :-s

Dear friend,
you should really know that there is no matter what kind of twitch you experience, unless you do not have clinical weakness, it is a benign one.
I have also buzzing sensations in the right half of my tongue, and it does not disable me from having vocal lessons, believe me.

please understand and learn as from the heart (especially after recent clarifications given to our fellow by two most respectable ALS specialists in the Europe, Dr. Carvahlo and Dr. Eisen) that in moving towards ALS diagnosis only significant signs of neural damage counts - clinical weakness (or even sublinical but still evident in common neuro exam), specific and non-subtle changes in reflexes, etc. etc. Twitches of whatever nature do not fit this classification, and if you consider that Matt's case is substantially different from yours, I am 100 % sure you can find here so many people with localized twitch at the tip of the tongue to feel yourself quite on safe side.

However as I said, common medical coinsensus is that twiches itself of whatever nature do not matter if they are not accompanied by more serious neural damage signs.

I remember over the past months I did feel I strange numbness or tingly sensation and I remember poking at my tongue when this happened.... I even bit down on it a good few times ... Now it's not buzzing but twitching :-(
Going to get an emg test to help put my mind at ease...
I just can't think about anything else right now...

I know. I was in your shoes.
But you can think about it in a way: "well, I am not alone, there is a bunch of people having the same" and "This does not fit any MND clinical picture but fits BFS".
Hope this would help a bit.

(I might be a bit rude but I know from the experience of this community that if you would not change the route of thinking, EMG would not do any good to you and just would throw you in a doubt cycle).

Really ? So emg might not be the right course ? I thought if it was clean I would be ok and stop worrying about my tongue twitching ! But then again I am fixating on my tongue and I am getting twitches head to toe and they are not worrying me as much... Just whilst typing I have had twitches on my eye, stomach, legs and face :-s

And another important thing.
you have TWO little babies at your care.
Didn't you think that natural worries and severe lack of sleep and normal schedule caused by presence of one small kid and one infant are the route cause of your condition (both twitches and extreme anxiety)?
For me it looks quite clear that you are anxious in fact due to exhaust caused by two babies under your responsibility, and this is well enough and good and natural reason.

In that condition going to neuros is on my point of view is pure wasting of time. Again, you have already positive professional conclusion regarding your neurological status, and you need a proper conclusion and treatment for your physical and mental status (e.g., from GP and psychiatrist) to see how far your exhaust had affected your psychic and somatic conditions, and get proper treatment for those real conditions, becasue for thwitches there is no magic pill to stop them. neuros also do not have treatment program for BFS becasue it includes some actions for which usually psychiatrist and psychologist are responsible.

When somebody in your close circle suffers from chemical addiction, they may develop neurological symptomes, for example, tremors, loss of balance. slurry speech. Do you go with a drunk men to neurologist? Nope. you will go to suppot centre, to psychiatrist, to AAA, whatever - because the root cause is a substance abuse. Well, people with substance abuse may need some adaptive medication to cure physical damage caused by chemicals, but only along or after their psychological rehabilitation. You (and me) are a bit in the same situation, we are also affected by substances, our internal stress hormones, and we need proper system (inculding support systems, sometimes even like AAA) to cope with that affection.

BFS may have any underlying conditions - autoimmune, genetic damage. poisoning, flu reaction whatever. But when it comes to huge health anxiety added on top, it must be treated by proper specialists or it would be a real waste of time and efforts and money in attempts to get reassusrance and cure form doctors which have nothing to do with health anxiety.
