I've had that in my hands, arms, and legs (usually my calves). The shocks can be powerful enough to stop me in my tracks when walking. There are several possible causes, including peripheral neuropathy, nerve root compression, etc. It's something to take up with your doctor, and possibly see a neurologist about.
The neurologists I've seen have cleared me of neurological problems. The most likely explanation in my case is a spinal cyst at L5/S1, a long-term vitamin D and B12 deficiency (probably due to celiac disease, but that remains to be confirmed), and/or hypothyroidism. In other words, most likely structural problems and metabolic issues in my case.
