Questions About BFS

Postby Guest on September 24th, 2002, 5:33 pm

1. 25

2. Male

3. White

4. About 3 months

5. I got real sick and feverish, I never noticed twitches before that. I went in for surgery for Appendix, and when I woke up I jerked so bad I couldn't fall asleep for days! I did notice some mild jerks while I was ill before the surgery, but nothing before that, and nothing like after the surgery.

6. Both, but they manifested themselves worse than ever after my illness, surgery.

7. Insomnia, muscle soreness and burning, weakness

8. Yes...I still haven't had EMG

9. Calves, primarily left, neck, other places

10. The neck feels pretty freaky

11. I must add this: Does anyone else in your family suffer from this? Yes! I just found out that my dad, a severe anxiety sufferer, has these problems too. They can be quite extreme, like mine.

1. 40

2. Female

3. Caucasion

4. White

5. 7 months

6. Not currently (but my GP will argue that one), however I was under severe stress for the first 35 years of my life. I was depressed from about age 11-35

7. I had 4 very stressful months just prior to twitching. I went through bursitis of the hips and received cortisone shots 3 months after first twitch. I became extremely twitchy after the second shot. I had meningitis when I was 9 and have always wondered if there could be long-term effects.

8. Yes on MS. Yes and no on ALS. I knew someone who died from ALS and he was very far "gone" before the twitching even started. Based on that, I knew that I didn't have ALS. However, I needed a clean EMG to convince myself.

9. Feet and calves the most.

10. Throat, eardrum, bladder

11. I also get lots of cramping which is mostly painless, numbness, vibrating, an occasional cold limb (lasts only minutes). Was once awoken by jolts up and down my right side.

1. Age: 47
2.Gender: Female
3. Race: White
4. Length of time: 8 months (but had once before 10 years ago for 2 months and it stopped)
5. Trigger: #1 is stress, followed by cold/flu symptoms
6.OCD/Anxiety?: Definitely generalized anxiety...been working on it for many years. Much better than I used to be. Worry about my health.
7. I was told I have fibromyalgia. Probably do, but it isn't anything that I can't deal with. Have thyroid problems. Was borderline hyperthyroid, now and changing to borderline hypo. Thyroid disease runs in my family.
8. ALS scare?: Heck YES. I'm in the medical field and sometimes that's not a good know too much. Still have fleeting moments where I wonder, but deep down, logicially know I don't. Was worked up for MS once and was negative too.
9. Body area most affected: My arches of my feet and calves. They twitch ALOT. Have periods when it's calm, but not often. My big toe even will move at times with the arch twitches. Have had them in ribs, back, eye, cheek, buttocks, thigh...everywhere.
10. Most unusual would be that sometimes I swear I have them in my finger and fingertips, but you can't see anything. I can feel them.

One neurologist said that I was born with a very sensitive nervous system and that sometimes they don't know why some people have odd symtoms that they can't diagnose. Stress seems to be a big culprit, but I feel there is something going on with BFS that they haven't pinpointed yet. Rest assured, I don't think it's anything that will harm us, it's just annoying!

1. 25
2. Male
3. White, Half/Spanish American
4. since mid July of this year
5. Previous to the twitches I experienced a bout of anxiety related to strange symptoms i was having (i.e. abdominal pain, chest pain, all diagnosed as benign)
6. You bet..GAD with the occassional panic attack thrown in for good measure.
7. Nope..
8. Sure did... Still trying to convince myself I don't have ALS even after being told otherwise by two gp's and a neuro.
9. Legs...Lap muscles and calves
10. Right cheek

Great thread BTW! These twitches have been a constant annoyance for almost 3 months now. However, with each new day (and not to mention, with each trip to the neuro), I think I'm slowly starting to convince myself that what I have is non-life threatening.

I think a good additional question to this survey would be:
Have you ever had herpes, shingles, chicken pox or post herpetic neuralgia?
My guess is, most of the responses will be "yes". Please, see the other discussion group related to herpes and BFS.

5.Viral infection right before the twitches, work with kids am always picking up something.
6. I have anxiety during times of stress or when I stress myself out. I can stress out easliy but I feel I have gained control of this. I would say my anxiety is mild and not a continuous thing.
7. Heart palpatations, had them checked, no problems,
they run in my family.
