Ankle, leg, foot tightness & fears of weakness

Postby Gracey48 on September 29th, 2012, 12:03 pm

Last week I posted on here that I had twitching in one specific spot on my right calf which had be going on continuously for over two weeks, and I was very concerned about it.

Another symptom that I have been experiencing during this time, but have paid less attention to until now, is a noticeable stiffness in my right ankle and a “twisted” or “tightened” feeling in my right leg from the ankle to the knee. I also have soreness and tightness in the ball of my right foot which is really present when barefoot, and only relieved when wearing shoes. My right ankle cracks a lot when walking or taking stairs. I tried a chiropractor for the first time, and he said I had a little less flexibility and range of motion in my right ankle than with my left. About 4 weeks ago, these feelings would come and go, but now they have been persistent for about two weeks.

This combined with the twitching has me REALLY SCARED now, even though the twitching has subsided a little over the last 3 - 4 days. I’ve read where ankle stiffness, muscle tightening, and an awkward feeling in the foot and leg are described as early symptoms of ALS, and can precede actual weakness. I’m afraid I’m progressing from the twitching to early signs of weakness, and I’m getting very distraught.

As I said before, I saw a neuromuscular specialist 4.5 weeks ago, but that was before this feeling in my foot, ankle, and leg really came about.

I don’t know if this can be related to BFS the way twitching can be, but I thought I’d check to see if anyone else experienced this.

Thanks,

Grace

Hi Grace

I've had a feeling of tightness in my ankles and I'm sure I've seen replies where others have reported the same thing. So I would not be concerned about feelings of stiffness/tightness.

I've never seen anything that supports the statement 'ankle stiffness, muscle tightening, and an awkward feeling in the foot and leg are described as early symptoms of ALS'. I would check the source of the information. As far as I'm aware, in general the first sign of ALS, is weakness caused by muscles no longer working.

With BFS there are commonly a whole range of symptoms other than the twitching and they vary a lot between individuals.

You say you are afraid of progressing to weakness, so that implies you are not experiencing weakness. You can take that as a positive.

So your other symptoms are entirely in line with BFS and should not be a cause of concern.

I have this EXACT same feeling. Except for the ball of the foot, I have the tightness in the ankle or calf area?? more kind of on the outer side of my calf. Now my leg hurts because I've been using it, I have a tiredness feeling as well but as the day has progressed its moved into like soreness or kind of hurting?? I wear heels (5in tall ones) but only my RIGHT leg feels it. This makes me nervous too. I know what you mean but I've had this since Feb!!!!! And I'm still walking and can run (even in the heels) but I hate it!!! I dunno why or what it is and why it's in the SAME location for SO long. :( but somedays I don't have it or it's VERY minimal. But I always can "feel my calf" dunno how else to say it.
