Face emg

Postby KERRI on July 24th, 2003, 6:05 pm

I have been feeling so weird lately, I felt like I could not swallow and that has been happening alot lately. I had a barium swallow done and it was negative. I now feel like I cannot swallow and my speach is slurred along with that I have the feeling of wetness or drool in the left side of my mouth. I feel like I have alot of saliva. I had an emg of my face done yesterday, my doctor performed it because I called complaining of these symptoms. He said it was totally negative he did the jaw area and the chin and said negative. He said if it were als after a year and all these emgs he would be amazed and he said that als should have shown its ugly face by now. I still feel bad like I am going crazy. I am going to see yet another als specialist on tuesday I guess I will have to waite and see what he says.

I am also going to see a lyme specialist on monday, could ya all do me a huge favor put a prayer in that it is lyme so I can get past all of this crap.

Hey Kerri,

I have had the whole drooling, excess saliva, slurring words sensation as well. If you ignore it, it will go away much more quickly.

Yeah that is what I was experiencing too. I think it is due to your paying too close attention to the wetness at the corners of your mouth. Like an elevated perception. That is why if you ignore it, it will go away mucho mas rapido. TRUST ME! You are fine.

Hey didn't you make us a promise that if your next EMG (That would be now two EMGs ago....) was clean, you would stop being so stressed? I would be super tired of stressing out so much by now if I were you. It isn't good for your health you know! I think you need to start thinking about how to deal with your fear of ALS. Go out and find some joy in your life.

maybe you should go to india or some place like that and have a one month ayeurvedic massage course? i found that india did wonderful things for my fear of ALS last year because 1) malaria/filaria/rat fever/... was a much more real and present danger and 2) it was a cool place that distracted me from my routine.

Funny you say that, my fiancee is from Bangelore, I hope I spelt that correctly, we are getting married twice here, once on Augsut 17th and once on September 7th, we are having christian and hindu weddings. His dad is a priest and has been trying to teach me meditation and other relaxation techniques. He keeps telling me he does not forsee anything bad in my future, but you know me, I will believe when I see it.

Kerri

If they could just find a way to detect ALS I think many of us would be a whole lot better.

There must be a test out there that can diagnose it. What about MRI or MRS I heard the Cleavland clinic was experimenting with that, does anyone know anything else about it.

hindu weddings are the best. i was in india for my friend's wedding, and it was the most amazing wedding i've ever seen.

kerri - how's your cpk then? is it normal, too? so far it sounds to me like the only clinical, measurable symptom you have that's consistent with ALS is twitching, but if you really had ALS, there would be lots of corroboratiing evidence. there is none, from what i've read of your posts.

My CPK is normal, the doctors have never witnessed any twitches in the office, even when they try to bring them out they cannot.

So there is absolutely no objective evidence that supports you having anything physiologically wrong with you, let alone ALS? I agree that you should really look into a shrink, then. I mean, it would be a good idea anyway, given how much your anxiety is messing with your life, but if the root of your symptoms is actually psychological... well, then the sooner you start dealing with that the better. Good luck!

I have been reading some scary stuff, I read about a guy who was 30 and had negative emgs for two years before the diagnosis of als appeared.
I am so scared again, I mean how many emgs does it take and how many years.

well there's your mistake right there -- you gotta stop reading and looking for the worst case. of course there are terrible worst cases out there, like the guy who ate beef in the UK once and got nvCJD 10 years later, but should everyone who visited the UK in the 1980s spend their time worrying about nvCJD? please, give it a break.

did you read about the boy in india who has flies flying out of his penis? the world population is huge, but there's no reason to suspect that you're going to be *the one* who gets hit by a confluence of terrible luck.

This is what i get for spending my life worrying about little things, GOD drops a big fat real disease on my ass so I can have something to really worry about.

The thing that scared me is apparently that guy was told it was anxiety as well.

well, 99.9999% of the time it is just anxiety. i bet that guy had clinically confirmed fasciculations or irregular cpk or SOMETHING, though. you, on the other hand, have had every single test in the book and you still aren't satisfied. muscle twitches aren't unusual, and you hardly even have any. all your other problems are most easily explained as being related to anxiety or benign conditions.

you have to see a shrink. you're on a bad trip, and you need someone to shake you out of it.

in the meantime, when i read your panicked messages i can't help but be affected myself -- my tongue starts to feel funny and i can feel my stress levels rising. an insecure part of me thinks 'if she's worrying, and she doesn't even twitch 20 times a day, what should i be doing, when i've had over 5400 twitches in one day?'.

anxiety is contagious, and you have to get yourself away from the triggers that are causing your obsession. if you want to get your spinal tap first, fair enough, but really, you have to move on.
