My apologies for not responding to your question until now. As I mentioned in my post from 14 Jan, I only stop in from time to time. Anyway, here is a brief answer to your questions.
How do you correlate gut with BFS?
The gut is the foundation of the immune system. When the gut is compromised, the immune system is compromised. Between the stress I was undergoing at that point in my life and the gut health issues I was dealing with, a chain reaction was set off causing an autoimmune response that resulted in my BFS symptoms. By treating myself for Leaky Gut, I was able to find relief and eventually reversal of my BFS symptoms.
What dietary changes did you make?
I cut out all processed foods, sugars, dairy, soy, gluten. It would be easier to list the foods I ate rather than all the foods I avoided. I went back to the basics. I ate fresh organic fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, and eggs. Some people call it the paleo diet or caveman diet. It was difficult at first, I won't lie. It made me feel better though and that kept me going. Eventually new tastes and habits were acquired. When you get your life back you realize it is worth it.
What is Leaky Gut Syndrome?
Leaky Gut Syndrome is the name given to the condition you develop when your intestine walls become so porous that they absorb undigested food proteins and toxins (stuff that is normally sent all the way through as waste) into your blood stream. Once in the blood stream it is up to your body to try and eliminate it or store it. This often overloads the detox organs and causes the immune system to ramp up. The undigested food proteins become targets of the immune system and new food intollerances are born. The immune system can even go autoimmune in the confusion and begin attacking the tissues of the body. There is a very long laundry list of chronic health conditions that can be caused by Leaky Gut Syndrome.

I wish it were that easy. Stopping the source of inflammation is the first step. Healing cannot begin until the inflammation has been halted and put under control. I am not a doctor and can only speak from my own experience, but I did require quite a bit of help from a holistic doctor who was experienced in this area. I had to avoid a lot more than just a few things. Like I said above, I went full Paleo/caveman diet and avoided all the foods that feed candida. Sugar is a big one. Processed foods contain too many ingredients where you just can't be certain what you are eating. I had to take supplements to reduce the candida and then probiotics to increase the good bacteria. I eventually was able to start working some foods back into my diet, but I still stick to a stricter diet than I used to. Basically if you go to a doc and they help confirm for you that you likely are dealing with leaky gut, you need to look yourself in the mirror and truly ask if you are committed to getting better. If so, roll up your sleeves and prepare for some lifestyle changes. Like I said above, I went all in and it was worth it to me. Some people won't make that same decision. Foods are too much of a comfort, despite the trouble it causes them. Its your life and your call. Just know you have to lie in the bed you make. Best of luck.
