BFS as a Manifestation of Small Fiber Neuropathy

Postby muppetdog on January 13th, 2014, 11:19 am

I have been looking into Small Fiber Neuropathy (SFN) because I have had a couple doctors suspect it. I am going to do some autonomic testing and a skin biopsy soon.

Here is what I have recently read:

http://www.neurology.org/cgi/content/meeting_abstract/80/1_MeetingAbstracts/P01.139

After doing some googling (I know... I know) it seems that fasciculations are common in SFN.

Here is an overview of what SFN is:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3086960/

and

https://www.therapath.com/Overview.php

Anyone have any thoughts?

Yes, I believe I have it too. When I mentioned it to my female neuro she said it made sense because 1) small fiber/ small diameter nerve neuropathies don't show up well on EMGs (hence my clean ones) and 2) it is often seen with autoimmune conditions such as lupus and sjogrens, which I suspect I have. She said that she could do a biopsy but that it might be a waste of $$$ because nothing I could really do about it except treat the underlying condition (in my case autoimmune).
When I mentioned it to my male neuro he was like "huh, maybe. Tell your rheumy about it, and here's some gabapentin, no need to see me again unless you're weak and dying" lol.
According to wiki there is also a link between small fiber peripheral neuropathy and fibromyalgia, which I wouldn't be surprised if a few BFSers have.
But for me the twitching is secondary to the pain and burning and electrical feelings I experience...I'm just grateful that my MRIs we're clean and it's not MS.

Also, I hate to keep beating the dead (gluten) horse but in one of the articles you posted I noticed they mentioned sfpn was sometimes a symptom of celiac disease. That is my diet modification post for the week :)

Yeah I just found this article that says fibromyalgia could be mistaken for Small Fiber Neuropathy
