Sound familiar anyone....Again

Postby garym on May 27th, 2004, 10:11 pm

While I know that most people on this site haven't taken any of the fluoroquinolone antibiotics, I feel that it is important for those of us that have to realize there could be a link.

Here it is.

Almost 1 1/2 years after I took Levaquin I'm considering a tendon

Has anyone had a tendon biopsy?

In Feb of 2003, I had 7 days of Levaquin

I could barely walk, had to crawl up my staircase. I had severe
muscle weakness, muscle burning and joint pain in all my limbs. I
ached and burned in what seemed every tendon in my body. I was
unable to sleep due to the pain.

I told my family and friends that I didn't know what was happening
to me. I felt like I had MS. After researching this drug online, I
realized I was having an ADR to Levaquin.

1 and ½ years later, I still have the following symptoms:
• Severe tendon/muscle pain and tightness
• Tendonitis
• Tingling, numbness, prickling, pins and needles sensations in my
• "Electrical" sensations
• Shooting pain
• Feeling of worms crawling under my skin
• Severe arm and leg weakness
• Twitching, spasms and contractions
I have limited function now, can't do my job any more and am

Diagnosis: My Rheumatologist, GP, Neurologist, Hand Specialist, Neck
& Spine specialist have ruled out rheumatoid arthritis, lupus,
neurological disorders, disc problems or nerve damage. I've had
EMG's, blood tests, xrays. All the doctors lean toward a
fibromyalgia diagnosis. I'm now considering a tendon biopsy to see
if Levaquin changed the cellular function of my tendons.

Wow. SOunds severe. I was on Levaquin for 6 weeks before I started twitching really badly last year (my first episode of severe twitching was in Aug. '98,) but for the life of me I can't remember then if I had been prescribed an antibiotic prior to that or what....I do remember going to the doctor shortly before then with an on-going sore throat...ANd you know what, Gary, I think I was on Cipro before that as well. ANd Ceftin, and Amox. and Augmentin...

But even if Levaquin did cause all these neuro problems for me, it was the only drug in six months of having a drug resistant sinus infection that cured it. I was more or less bed-ridden for much of that time...well worth the cost. Levaquin is one of the only drugs that fights mycoplasmas ...something to think about.

Well, Cherrio! HOw's the weather in Houston, BTW? It's hot and sunny here...great tubing weather!

Just be careful in the future, it could be a lot worse. Also, there is no doubt that they are very effective antibiotics, but they should only be used as a last resort. I was given cipro for a week when I didn't even have an infection (the culture was neg) .

Anyway, the weather here is hot and steamy. I can barely remember those days of floating down the river. I guess it's been to long, or wait maybe I was just sooooo intoxicated 8) . Whatever the reason, I can barely remember.

I guess I need to pay more attention to what I'm being given. I haven't really paid attention to the name of the antibiotics I'm given. I now remember that I had a long term sore throat for which I was given some kind of antibiotic [the kind where you take it for five days, but it's supposed to keep working for up to ten]. Not really sure of the timing, but I think it was 3-4 months prior to my first symptoms.
