Just as a side-note regarding caffeine, I am no expert on the subject but from what I understand the caffeine found in coffee and tea are the same. From what I've read, there was a time when it was believed that theine (in tea) was different from caffeine which was found in coffee but then later on it was discovered that they are the same. Having said that, green tea has many more benefits (such as antioxidants) than does coffee. I actually drink de-caf green tea to avoid the caffeine and still get the benefit. I think that people are less sensitive to caffeine in tea vs. coffee because often there is just less of it per cup.

Any thoughts? Any chemistry experts out there?!

caffeine in tea and coffee

Postby rob_s on June 4th, 2004, 1:58 pm

The caffeine in coffee and tea is exactly the same chemical compound, and has exactly the same effect on your nervous system. Generally speaking, the amount of caffeine in coffee is 3-4 times that in a regular cup of tea. Here is a sample list from the USDA (mg of caffeine per 8 oz serving):

8-ounce Beverage, milligrams of caffeine

Coffee, Drip 115-175
Coffee, Brewed 80-135
Coffee, Espresso (2 ounces) 100
Coffee, Instant 65-100
Tea, iced 47
Tea, brewed, imported brands (avg.) 60
Tea, brewed, U.S. brands (avg.) 40
Tea, instant 30
Tea, green 15
Hot cocoa 14
Coffee, Decaf, brewed 3-4
Coffee, Decaf, instant 2-3

Many herbal teas have less than 1 mg caffeine or no caffeine at all.

The caffeine extracted from coffee and tea in freshman chemistry experiments is identical! (I am a chem prof).

I have tagged on a list of caffeine content for other drinks below. I hope this is helpful.

Thanks for the list. I have been avoiding caffeine since this began. I can't say that it has helped, but I know it hasn't hurt.
