Magnesium - How much ?

Postby johnny999 on March 30th, 2011, 6:07 pm

Anyone tried it ? Apparently, over 60% of americans are deficient..

Today, I tried two 500 mg servings - no results yet.

mag. was one of my great hopes early on, didn't work at all. that is not to say that it will not work for you, but you should have your levels checked.

Take care,

I took mag supplements a while ago, can't remember the dose, had no effect. I wasn't deficient to begin with.

idk if i'm deficient, don't think i'd be able to get a test for this from my doc, however.. Took 6 months of heart issues (finally better), continuous ear ringing, twitching, etc. to get referred to someone (neuro) an then shortly after, an MRI

if anything was off, i'm guessing it would be vit D, but probably couldn't "convince" my doc to test for that either :?

It takes months for Mg to take effect if the problem is on the cell level, the blood level does not really matter in our case.

tiggida: As I said, Mg level in blood does not mean that intercellular Mg is alright. Long term higher Mg in pregnancy can cause problems (fatique, dizzines and even prolonged pregnancy and "slower" birth (sorry not sure what the english term is) ). As I have no specialization in gyn, I do not dare to tell you how much you should take - your doctor should be able to prescibe you safe dose and monitor the level.
I think its definitely worth a try but its a run for months..

thats quite a good point its why people in general give up on vitamins as people expect instant results

an interesting snippet on magnesium i found haha:

The UN’s World Health Organization (WHO) has just recommended that drinking water contain 25-50 mg of magnesium per liter to prevent deaths from heart attack and stroke. American bottled water averages <5 mg of magnesium (Mg) per liter, while bottled water in the rest of the world averages about 20 mg of magnesium per liter.

There's so many foods that have magnesium and other minerals you need, i think for some of us we've been searching too long for singular foods TO eat, when we should be looking more at what to exclude (refined processed demineralized non-veggie non-legume etc.)..

even oatmeal has a good amount of Magnesium, BUT hot dogs, chex, white bread, white rice, 'NORMAL' foods DO NOT.
